Overlook Hall was alight with beautiful tree decorations and happy smiles last Sunday when scores of islanders gathered to compete in the second annual Catalina Christmas Tree Decorating Contest. Creativity flowed like wine as contestants, cheered by Santa and Mrs. Claus, worked their magic. In the end, ten gorgeous trees glittered with lights, ornaments, stars and a wide range of handmade decorations.

A jury comprised of CIF Board Members and the Clauses faced the impossible task of identifying the winning trees. After much deliberation, a three-way tie was declared between Afishinados (benefiting the Catalina Island Foundation), the Avalon Interact Club (a Rotary-sponsored service group for young people), and the Pearls of Christ (a non-profit group affiliated with Avalon Community Church). Each winner's designated non-profit received a $600 prize as well as proceeds from the subsequently auctioned trees.  All other contest participants received prize packages thanks to a generous donation from Lloyds of Avalon.

The contest was co-sponsored by the Catalina Island Foundation and Overlook Hall in support of local non-profit groups.  With overflow crowds and a warm holiday vibe, the event has already become one of our community’s very best.   Watch for it again next year... or, better yet, organize your own team and compete!

The Catalina Island Foundation (CIF) is a region-of-interest charitable fund that supports community programs on Santa Catalina Island.  CIF’s financial administration is under the auspices of The San Diego Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)-3 organization. CIF was founded in 2014 with the mission of becoming a permanent source of financial support for local community groups.  Originally a Florentine-style church built in 1929, Overlook Hall is now the island’s favorite special events venue unmatched in charm and loveliness.
