Round the Island with Doug Bombard
Article dated: Saturday, April 25, 2009
Golden Era of Catalina Speedboats with Doug Bombard This 10-minute video shares the history of the Miss Catalina speedboats that offered visitors to the Island a thrilling and memorable boat ride for many years.
The story is told by Doug Bombard, founder of the Catalina Express cross channel carriers and former speedboat driver and son of Al Bombard. Video © Catalina Island Museum |
For many of us on the island, Doug Bombard is a living legend. Doug has lived on the island for over 70 years. He cut his teeth running the Miss Catalina speedboats, then ran the Two Harbors operation, founded the Catalina Express in the 1980s and all along the way has been involved in countless island projects and programs.
Thanks to his generosity in wanting to raise funds for the Catalina Island Museum, one of his favorite local charities, you now have a chance to spend an afternoon listening to his stories about our special island, while seeing all the various camps and coves and coastline from the comfort of a single-hulled Express boat. Mark your calendar for October 8th (11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). What will make the Museum's 2009 Round the Island Cruise even better than the trip they ran in 2007 is that he has invited several island friends to join him in sharing unique background and insights about all the special places around the island. Ada Blanche Wrigley Schreiner will be just one of Doug's friends that will share some of her unique stories of the island. The boat will make a stop at the dynamic USC Wrigley Marine Science Center for lunch and a brief tour before heading around the West End to explore the windward side of our island.
Seating is limited to 130, so hurry and get your tickets now! $200/person or $350 for two. Call 310-510-2414 ext. 1# to buy tickets by phone, or log on to our website to download a ticket order form or buy tickets online!

Antonios Pizzeria & Deli
|
Step back into an authentic 50s-style pizzeria and deli at Original Antonio's, located a 1/2 block from the bay. Crispy crusted pizza oozing with cheese, red checkered table cloths and the best music from the 1950s make Original Antonio's a favorite local place to go in Avalon. Pizzas, pastas, salads, soups and hot and cold sub sandwiches all to eat in our nostalgic dining room or take it to go. We serve beer and wine and best of all pizza by the slice! For 30 years, Original Antonio's Pizzeria & Deli has been a favorite spot for lunch and dinner year round.
