AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - The 4th Annual Catalina Island Plein Air Painting Exhibition at the Catalina Island Museum has been extended through February 6, 2004. Sponsored by the Society for the Advancement of Plein Air Paining the popular exhibit features over twenty Catalina Island scenes painted by contemporary artists, many on loan from private collectors, and a video station focusing on the history of Plein Air painting in California. Coined in the 1870s, the term Plein Air refers to paintings which are executed outdoors, generally quickly, in an attempt to capture a certain mood, atmosphere and light. From the 1880s through the 1930s many talented Plein Air artists captured stunning Catalina landscapes in their work. The island has also been integral in the genre's recent revival.
To celebrate the success of this year's Plein Air Exhibition, the Museum will host a special members-only wine and hors d'houevres reception on Saturday, February 5, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. Originally scheduled for January 15th, the reception was rescheduled following the recent landslide on Casino Way. |
