AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - A series of storms have brought much needed rain to Catalina Island. After years of drought the ground was dry and early stroms yielded minimal run-off. Southern California Edison reported on January 26 that the Middle Ranch Reservoir Level was at 358 acre feet. Since that time the ground has become saturated and the recent rains have begun to run into Thompson Reservoir. As of February 12 the reservoir has risen to 582 acre feet.

Hurricane Rick brings an extra Cruise Ship to Catalina Island

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - Hurricane Rick, once a Category Five storm off the Mexican Coast, has resulted in an extra cruise ship call this week. The increase brings a total of four cruise ships to Catalina Island this week.

Boats ranging from 18- to 43-feet will pull skiers from ages 12 to 77 from Long Beach to Catalina Island and back. The Catalina Ski Race is an exhilarating yet grueling test of athlete, equipment, team and racing boats.
