Catalina Island Boater's Perspective

Saturday, January 01, 2005
AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - The island emerges into full view and grows larger as we approach. Ridges and canyons become defined; Eucalyptus silhouettes stand tall and Prickly Pear rambles toward the sea. Finally, the statuesque Casino appears, resting boldly on the water's edge. Harbor lights flash illuminating Avalon's entrance, inviting sea-farers to embrace her magic. Whether traveling by power or sail, approaching Santa Catalina Island by boat is breathtaking.

Two Harbor's West End Hummer Tour

Saturday, January 01, 2005
AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - Catalina Island's history is rich with provocative tales of natives and ranchers, soldiers and pirates. Exploring the island's "West End" is a magical journey back in time and beyond - the weathered fence posts, the smugglers coves, the Indian kitchens, all well painted details to the backdrop of the ageless land and the surrounding sea. Indigenous flora litter the red clay hillsides. Eagles, foxes, and an occasional deer grace the visitor with their presence. So what could be better than a nature hike through this picture-perfect landscape? How about a rip-roaring safari slash thrill-ride in Two Harbors own customized 4-wheel drive "Hummer" vehicle?

A Day of Diving Delights on Catalina Island

Saturday, January 01, 2005
AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND -  leaned back on the bow of the Prince Neptune and began to close my eyes as the Prince sailed back to Avalon on an ocean as smooth as a mirror. My husband and I had just spent our first day as newlyweds scuba diving along the north-eastern shore of Santa Catalina Island, and I was blissfully exhausted. But the water was so unbelievably calm, the view of the Catalina's golden hills dotted with oak groves so breathtakingly beautiful that I couldn't sleep.

A Marathon Like No Other

Saturday, January 01, 2005
AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - I was so busy preparing myself for the big race that I didn't pay attention to the weather forecast. After all, in March anything could happen, right? Most serious runners I know pack clothes for any eventuality. But, on race day when we got off the boat that took us from Avalon to the isthmus, few seemed thrilled to see the rain pouring down in sheets. "Be careful stepping off the boat!" Express personnel warned us as the big cat pitched around next to the dock.
