Catalina Island Chamber Begins the Process to Determine the Feasibility of a Cruise Ship Facility in Avalon

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - The Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce has begun the process to determine the feasibility of building a cruise ship passenger disembarkation/embarkation facility in the vicinity of Cabrillo Mole. At the City Council meeting on July 20th, the Chamber asked the Avalon City Council to participate in the study and to contribute up to $10,000 of the study's cost. The remainder of funding for the study is expected to come from the cruise industry and local businesses. The City Council voted unanimously 5-0 in favor of approving the Chamber's Request.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - The Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce, sponsor of the sixth annual Taste Around of Avalon, is pleased to announce the winners of this year's Best of Tastes. The winner of the "Best of Food Taste" is The Lobster Trap, the "Best of Drink Taste" is Steve's Steakhouse and the "Best of Dessert Taste" goes to the Catalina Country Club. Each first place winner won $100.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - The Inaugural Wooden Boat Challenge will be part of the 3rd Annual Flying Fish Festival. Watch as teams build boats on South Beach then race it around a short marked course, without sinking. Each team gets a complete materials package and multiple prizes and trophies will be awarded.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - Unofficial results of Avalon's April 13 City Council election are in. Bob Kennedy has won his bid for re-election as Avalon's Mayor, and Council Member Michael Ponce has won re-election. Also elected to the City Council is Ralph Morrow.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - Catalina Express:
All departures to and from the island have been canceled for the rest of today.
Current weather readings indicate winds at 25 kts gusting to 30 kts. There is a Gale Warning through this evening.
The forecast for Friday shows a much improved weather situation, and it is hoped that operations can resume tomorrow morning.
The Catalina Express Office on the Mole will be closed for the rest of today.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - Shop at Home Night was a great success with residents and visitors coming out for caroling, hot chocolate and shopping on a bracing winter evening. The 22 participating merchants offered discounts cards valid until Christmas Eve and stamped the Treasure Card for entry into the New Year's Eve Gala drawing. Each store held an individual drawing that evening to give away a store gift. The Chamber is pleased to announce the names of the Shop At Home Night prize winners.
