Lots of Foxes Out There

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - An estimated 950 Catalina Island foxes now call the Island "home" - up from 784 at this time last year. This newest total was the result of an annual 12-week Island-wide trapping effort by Conservancy Wildlife Biologists Julie King and Calvin Duncan.

The bad news is that, with more foxes around, there's also more temptation to reach out and pet or feed these incredibly cute wild creatures. Bad idea. Interaction with foxes, no matter how well-intentioned, has resulted in human injury and could be deadly for foxes.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - At first, Catalina Island Conservancy personnel took away their romantic, candle-lit dinners. Then, they offered them condoms - but the bison refused. Never the less, to ensure bison health and to protect Catalina's ecosystem - which includes more than 50 plants and animals found on Catalina and nowhere else in the world - Catalina's non-native bison population is managed at between 150 and 200 animals down from a herd of up to 600 animals at it's height.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - More than 140 pilots and a crowd of more than 400 people from all over the Southland made Catalina's Airport in the Sky their destination on Sunday, October 18 for the 50th anniversary of service to the public at the Island's aviation landmark. Up until October 1959, the airport was only available to those who leased land and facilities from the Santa Catalina Island Company.

Conservancy keeps Bison Herd healthy ships 150 to the Dakotas

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - One hundred and fifty of Catalina's 300 non-native bison on Tuesday, October 21, were shipped from the Island to the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in southern North Dakota and northern South Dakota. One hundred and fifty animals remain on the Island.

The Airport in the Sky will welcome guests on from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, October 18 for a celebration commemorating 50 years of service for private aircraft. Pilots will be treated to a retro landing fee of only $3 - 1959 prices in observance of the event.

$1,000 Reward Posted for Killer of Bison Calf

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - A young bison, less than one year old, was slaughtered on a side road off the Marble Quarry Road on the Island's West End. Whoever killed the calf cut off its head and made off with the body. The Conservancy, which manages the bison herd on the Island is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator or perpetrators.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - For the past 85 years, American bison have roamed the rugged interior of Catalina, creating an iconic herd that began its life as part of the classic silent movie "The Vanishing American." For the health of the bison and the Island ecosystem, the herd is managed at between 150 and 200 individuals by repatriating animals periodically to a Sioux Indian reservation in South Dakota, where they will live out their natural lives on the grassy plains.
