Avalon Harbor Activity Report - February 2010
|
Thursday, March 11, 2010
AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - Another wet month with almost 4 inches of rain did wonders for our reservoir. The island is a bright emerald color with the burn areas looking lush. On the 5th we received almost 2 inches with measurable amounts over 7 other days ending with .69 on the 27th. Even with our 8 days of measured rain, we had only 3 Small Craft Advisories. Due to the earthquake in Chile on the 27th a Tsunami Advisory was issued for areas including the coastal areas of California and stated that a tsunami is capable of producing strong currents or waves. Some California marine areas did experience high waves, flooding and unusual tide conditions and although the Advisory for our waters did spark much concern, Avalon seemed unaffected.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - October blew in with a Gale watch which resulted in a small craft advisory on the first Saturday of the month. With the beginning of Lobster season and the first weekend of Jazz Trax, the strong winds were not welcomed and prevented the harbor from filling up. Fortunately, the winds subsided by Monday allowing for the "Paradise" to visit on Tuesday the 6th, the "Elation" on Wednesday and Celebrity's "Millennium" to arrive on Friday on it's way from Alaska to the Caribbean via the Panama Canal. Hurricane Rick in Mexico caused the "Sapphire Princess" to alter its course and call on Avalon on the 21st. The "Mercury" and its passengers spent the day in Avalon on the 22nd.
