AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - Most Catalina residents have at some point seen the Tole Mour (TOW-LEE-MORE), a handsome three-masted schooner, just off Catalina’s coast. This week, while in the Santa Barbara Channel, students on that vessel were treated to an experience that few people in Southern California ever get to have: seeing orcas up close and personal.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - The first weekend of April was a carry over from March with Gale force winds on the 1st, no Express boats ran and the Newport Boat and Island Express Helicopters were filled to capacity. The weather also forced the cancellation of the infamous annual “Rubber Ducky Derby” and the “Ocean Ohana Outrigger Challenge”. By Tuesday the winds had calmed for the visit of the “Inspiration” and on Wednesday, the “Star Princess” visited with 2542 passengers.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - The Los Angeles Conservancy awarded its 2012 Preservation Award to the Santa Catalina Island Company (SCICO) for its substantial restoration of the island’s historic Casino building, which was opened in 1929. The building’s exterior had virtually been untouched for over 80 years. Beginning in 2009 the Casino’s restoration involved acute attention to detail to preserve the building’s Art Deco design and original sea-themed murals. The Los Angeles Conservancy will present the award to SCICO at the 31st Annual Preservation Awards Luncheon on Thursday, May 10 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - Edison’s defense of its failure to properly maintain the infrastructure of Catalina’s water system, then to over-engineer at an exorbitant cost so it can DOUBLE water rates as it readies the ailing enterprise for sale, is a transparent attempt to mislead. In their reply to a notice of the judge’s proposal by Norris Bishton, attorney for the Catalina Island Consortium, local representative Ron Hite and the firm’s publicist grossly mischaracterize Mr. Bishton’s role.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - During the November 1, 2011 City Council Meeting the City Council approved an agreement between the City of Avalon and the Santa Catalina Island Company for the Catalina Grand Prix Motorcycle Event scheduled for December 7-9, 2012. The agreement spells out the responsibilities of each party. This is the first step in the process of obtaining permits from various government entities.

Friday Evening: The Conservancy will host a special Artists Preview Dinner at Castillo del Mar, the spectacular home of Blanny Avalon Hagenah, a great-granddaughter of William Wrigley Jr. Our featured plein air artists will join us to discuss and preview select paintings that will be available at this year's show.
