AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - The Rotary Club of Avalon came to the aid of the Haiti earthquake tragedy by purchasing a Shelter Box for earthquake survivors in Haiti, according to Bryan Ballard, Rotary Club of Avalon President. In addition to the Club buying a Box, individual Rotarians from Avalon contributed their own funds to buy other Shelter Boxes for the troubled island nation.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - The first weekend after New Year's was a beautiful weekend with no strong winds and over 80 boats arrived to enjoy the nice weather. The following weekend welcomed the hearty souls that come to run 50 miles in Avalon's interior. Not only do these wonderful folks pay an entry fee, they are encouraged to obtain sponsorships. ALL proceeds from entry fees and sponsored mileage go to charity. Recipients include: Avalon Hospital, Avalon High School scholarships, Catalina Conservancy and the Bill Putnam Health Care Fund.

The bad news is that, with more foxes around, there's also more temptation to reach out and pet or feed these incredibly cute wild creatures. Bad idea. AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - In it's 29th year, the 2010 Avalon 50 Mile Benefit Run had a total of 16 finishers between the ages of 60-78. Runners, as young as 20 to as old as 78 years of age participated this year, a majority of the ultra runners were returning participants. With some runners just starting to become part of the tradition and others 27th years deep in it already, it's no surprise that the avid support for this race brings a family feeling to the start line.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - "Good Time Charlie" was having a bad day. Charlie, a brown pelican who frequented the mole in Avalon, had for reasons unknown - perhaps trying to free himself from a tangle of fishing line - suffered a compound fracture of his wing. His other wing was deformed at birth.
