Avalon Rotary Club Supports Haiti Relief Efforts

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - The Rotary Club of Avalon came to the aid of the Haiti earthquake tragedy by purchasing a Shelter Box for earthquake survivors in Haiti, according to Bryan Ballard, Rotary Club of Avalon President. In addition to the Club buying a Box, individual Rotarians from Avalon contributed their own funds to buy other Shelter Boxes for the troubled island nation. 

The Shelter Box program is a grassroots Rotary Club project which has rapidly grown to an international level. Each Shelter Box provides victims of disaster with shelter and a range of disaster relief needs. Shelter Box Founder Tom Henderson said: "Our teams around the world are doing all they can to ensure aid reaches the people of Haiti as soon as possible. With each day the need grows and we're doing all we can to get help to the thousands of families affected by this tragedy."
 
"The Haitian government needs tent shelters for 1.5 million Haitians and Shelter Boxes can fill a big need, Bryan stated. "Our hearts go out to the Haitian people.  We are pleased that our Club could contribute a Shelter Box to help in providing such essential basic needs in such a distraught country."  
 
Each Shelter Box contains a 10-person tent, a children's pack, blankets, ground sheets, water purification kit, a basic tool kit, small stove, pans, utensils, bowls, mugs and water storage containers.
