AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - Catalina Island Medical Center's Oak Room was transformed into a fine dining venue last Friday night, thanks to medical center employees and local volunteers.

Live music, fine china, and decadent centerpieces set the stage for the evening, which was designed as a special night for residents in CIMC's skilled nursing facility.

Nearly 25 people, including the residents and their loved ones, enjoyed the evening.

"A Candlelight Dinner by the Sea" was planned for several months by CIMC Activities Director Linda Rhoutsong and Dietary Manager Carol Dumont.

"We did it to show all of our residents how special they are," Rhoutsong said. "We had such a great turnout."

Rhoutsong said the evening would not have been possible without the help of local businesses and organizations, as well as volunteers.

Throughout the evening, live music was provided by Justyna Szymura on the piano and Dennis Alvarez on guitar, Avalon Community Church provided a full complement of dishes and Bloom Floral Design donated dramatic centerpieces for each table.

While A Candlelight Dinner by the Sea was the first event of its kind at the medical center, Rhoutsong said she regularly takes the facility's residents to various events in Avalon. "That's what my job is all about," she said, "improving their quality of life."

Volunteers to assist with outings are appreciated. For information, contact Rhoutsong at (310) 510-0700.
