AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - The California Billfish Series, the largest and richest billfish series in the Western United States, is proud to announce Penn Reels as the new title sponsor for the Zane Grey Invitational, and Crow's Nest Yachts as the new title sponsor of the Avalon Billfish Classic and Catalina Classic Marlin Tournaments. We are also pleased to announce the debut of our newly designed Catalina Classic website.
We are excited about some of the new features on the new website, and we are sure our viewers will be too. Signing up for the events has never been easier, with an online form you can submit electronically. Each team will have photos, roster, and past tournament results available on the site. Tournament anglers will have the ability to contribute comments, photos, and other input as well. When the tournaments are going on, we will have the live web cam and VHF tournament control streaming live so everybody can follow the action from their own computer. The new site will allow for tournament coverage and viewership like never before, and should be great for sponsors and tournament fans around the world.
Penn Reels has become the title sponsor of the prestigious Zane Grey Invitational Marlin Tournament. "This event has always drawn the cream of the crop, and we are absolutely thrilled to be the title sponsor" said Penn Reels Saltwater marketing manager Bob Hoose. Penn Reels have been in the forefront of fishing reels since 1932, and continues to be the leader in big game fishing reels.
For teams that really want to see where they stack up against the best teams in the West, the Penn Reels Zane Grey Invitational Marlin Tournament will provide just that opportunity. The Penn Zane Grey Invitational is known as a shootout between the very best teams in the west. Top teams, big money and strong competition are what this event is all about. Limited to 40 teams, this event features a modified release format that allows teams to score points for released fish, as well as earn additional bonus points for weighing fish that exceed the minimum size requirements set by the tournament. Typically a team will need to release several fish and weigh a big one to take first place in this prestigious event. This year's event will take place September 13-16, with check in on Sunday evening, followed by three days of fishing, cumulating in an awards ceremony on Wednesday evening.
Crow's Nest Yachts has been named the title sponsor for the Avalon Billfish Classic and Catalina Classic marlin tournaments, which will be held concurrently this year. Crow's Nest Yachts, with four waterfront locations on the West Coast, is the largest independent dealership/brokerage in the west, and is the exclusive dealer for some of the top sport fishing boats available, including Parker, Contender, Tiara, and Viking Yachts. "We have a very deep rooted involvement in the West Coast fishing community, and being involved in these events at this level demonstrates our commitment to the anglers and the sport" stated Crow's Nest Yachts CEO Anthony Hsieh. "We have a tremendous collection of top notch anglers on our Crow's Nest Fishing Team and also with Team Bad Company, and we look forward to sharing their knowledge and expertise with the tournament anglers this year." Hsieh added. While some of these members will be participating, Team Bad Company will not be competing as a unit, but will be on hand to help all participants compete at a higher level. Taking place in Avalon, Catalina Island, The Crow's Nest Catalina Classic continues to be the top marlin tournament in the Western United States. Exciting finishes, big money, and lots of fun is the DNA that the Classic is made of. The 2008 event saw 47 teams catch 109 marlin (95% where released) while competing for $250,000 in cash and prizes. Just one pound separated first place La Dulce Vida and second place Mizpah. In 2007, the winning team Good Karma took home a record $354,275 for their overtime, last second winning striped marlin. Now in its 17th year, the Crow's Nest Catalina Classic is known as "The" event to fish in. Part party, part high stakes fishing tournament, anglers agree this is an event not to be missed.
Things get going on Sunday, September 20 with the check in festival at the Descanso Beach Club in Avalon. Aside from picking up your tournament bag full of free goodies from event sponsors, participants, and their families can visit displays set up by tournament sponsors, participate in the Berkley Knot Tying Contest, Pompanette Fight the Fish Contest, a Chipping contest, casting contest, and more. Fishing takes place on September 21 and 22, with the weigh station on the world famous green pleasure pier serving as tournament control. Spectators watch as boats weigh their fish, listen to tournament control for updated action, and follow the results on the tournament leader board. The awards take place the evening of September 22 in the famous Casino Ballroom overlooking Avalon Harbor. Awards are based on the largest fish weighed that meet the tournaments minimum size requirements. The Crow's Nest Catalina Classic entry fee will remain at $2,000 for a 4 angler team, plus optional daily jackpots in the amount of $250, $500, $1,000, and $2,000. Additional anglers can be added for $125 per angler (max 6 per team). Anglers looking to be rewarded for catching and releasing marlin can share the excitement of the Crow's Nest Avalon Billfish Classic 100% Release Marlin Tournament , which will be run in conjunction with the Crow's Nest Catalina Classic in 2009. This event is designed to be a fun event for teams of all skill levels. Teams will be competing for valuable prizes and awards, with optional daily jackpots offered. Four mega raffle drawings, each valued at $5,000, will be held just for the participants of this tournament. All anglers will be entered to win prizes such as Fraser Volpe stabilized binoculars, a set of 5 Cal Star/Accurate rod and reel combos from Fisherman's landing Tackle Shop, and more. From the check in festival at Descanso Beach Club in Avalon on Sunday, September 20 to the final awards ceremony at the world famous Casino Ballroom on Tuesday, September 22, participants of both events will be sharing the fun and excitement of tournament fishing at its best. Tournament Control, shotgun starts, crowds on the pier, it just does not get more thrilling than this.
