By Catalina Island Sports - Adults

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - The Mens Avalon Summer Softball League opened it's season on Friday, June 19.  52 men are playing on four sponsored teams:  Art, Caps n Designs, Catalina Express, Glenmore Hotel and Island Rentals.  The first game of the night was between Catalina Express and Art, Caps n Designs.  Art, Caps n Designs opened the game with three runs crossing the plate.  Jorge Hernandez ended the Catalina Express threat in the second with his amazing diving catch in center to rob Ulyces Alvarado of a base hit.  In the third Joe Hernandez had the amazing stop at shortstop to throw the runner out at second to record the first out of the inning.  Art, Caps n Designs went on in the third to add four more runs to their total.  Catalina Express got on the board in the fourth with a run.  Both teams continued to score throughout the remainder of the game, but Art, Caps n Designs never let go of the lead.  Final score Catalina Express 9, Art, Caps n Designs 14.

The second game of the night between Island Rentals and Glenmore Hotel looked like it was going to be the first blow-out of the season.  After two Glenmore Hotel was up ten to three.  In the bottom of the third Justin Hernandez at second turned the double play, which could have been a triple play when he caught the line drive, got the runner at first, then the first baseman threw to second, but there was already an out, so it was just an exciting double play.  Glenmore scored one more in the fourth, then Island Rentals started chipping away at the lead.  Glenmore was held scoreless the rest of the game, while Island Rentals came up in the ninth inning down by 2.  With two outs Island Rentals collected four base hits and an error to see three runs cross the plate, and take the lead for the first time in the game.   Glenmore Hotel left two runners stranded in the bottom of the ninth with no runs scored.  Final score Glenmore Hotel 11, Island Rentals 12.
