New analyzer will save lives

Catalina Island Medical Center's laboratory now has a new way to determine a patient's cardiac status, thanks to the Catalina Island Medical Center Foundation. The foundation recently purchased a troponin analyzer to supplement the hematology analyzer currently in use. Troponin is a protein that becomes severely elevated after a patient has a heart attack.

Health Fair Improves Community's Health

Nearly 10 percent of Avalon's population took advantage of the services offered at the Catalina Island Health Fair. Held in the Casino Ballroom on April 27, the health fair offered free and low-cost health screenings from dozens of mainland and local health-related agencies and companies. The annual event is sponsored by the Catalina Island Medical Center.
