Boy Scout Camporee in Avalon

The Los Fierros District of the Long Beach Area Council of the Boy Scout of America will be conducting a Council Wide Camporee in Avalon from Friday, April 27th to Sunday, April 29th. This Camporee is being hosted by Troop 400 that is sponsored by the City of Avalon. It is anticipated that the event will include about 450 Scouts and Adult Leaders. This is the first camporee in 11 years in the City of Avalon.

More than 500 U.S. Marines and guests from Camp Pendelton visited Catalina Island to celebrate the 232nd birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps. Wearing their dress blues they were met with cheers on their way to the Casino Ballroom.

Hiking Santa Catalina Island

Never before have I hiked a place like Catalina. From a vehicle, it looks typical of Southern California with low-growing coastal sage scrub and chaparral plants. The island scrub oak woodlands look stunted. The coastal vistas are colorful contrasts of sky, land, and sea. The watchable wildlife visible from a moving car or tour bus is most often the herd of American bison (living relicts of a 1920's movie project), the abundant common raven, or an occasional Beechey ground squirrel darting across the road.

Telemedicine adds new services at CIMC

Dawn Sampson recently had a conversation with a television. Catalina Island Medical Center's licensed clinical social worker was discussing her patients' anticipated needs with psychiatrist Dr. Jagdeep Garewal. Garewal, who was in Bakersfield, and Sampson, who was in CIMC's Oak Room, were able to have the conversation via video conferencing equipment that is the cornerstone of CIMC's new telemedicine program.
