July in Avalon...summer is in full swing. Gloomy weather with overcast skies and morning fog did not stop boaters from visiting the area. The Harbor was packed over the 4th July weekend, with many vessels anchored up and down the coast of Catalina Island. Adding to the boating activity were weekly visits by the MONARCH OF THE SEAS and ECSTASY cruise ships, bringing over 5000 visitors each week to Avalon.

| University Tackles Problem of Lost Fishing Gear

With a new $300,000 grant from the California Coastal Conservancy, the UC Davis Wildlife Health Center will deploy divers along the coast from the Channel Islands to the Oregon border to clean up lost and abandoned fishing gear, which can be dangerous to wildlife, boaters and divers.

Even with cloudy weather, the harbor was full over Memorial Day Weekend, with several vessels side tied and anchored up and down the coast. Big thanks to all boaters using the dinghy docks and following the posted regulations. In May, 104 dinghies were tagged for 72 hours and not one dinghy was cited.

April boat traffic was a slower than usual with 5 SCA warnings and 1 gale warning during the month. The Hollywood Yacht Club visited the harbor on April 1st. and the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club visited on April 22nd.

Weather in March was not the best for boaters visiting Catalina Island, with 8 SCA occurring mostly on weekends. Harbor Patrol Officers were kept busy removing and installing dinghy docks with each SCA received. Rosie's Fish Market, Joe's Rent-a-Boat and the Wetspot all opened for the season during the last week of March.

Tuesday, March 22
0850 Hrs: (Avalon) Baywatch Avalon and Rescue 6 responded to a truck vs.
golf cart collision. The golf cart patient was treated and transported to
Catalina Island Medical Center (CIMC).
1300 Hrs: (Avalon) Baywatch Avalon, Avalon Fire Department Rescue 6 and
County Fire responded to an 86-year-old female who suffered a laceration
from a fall. The patient was treated at the scene and transported to CIMC for
further treatment.

Again, weather is the top story for February. Ten rainy days dropped over 6.14 inches of rain, bringing a total of 13.14 inches in two months and the season rainfall from Sept to date to 21.31 inches. In addition to rain, there were 6 SCA and 2 gale warnings. With 3 weekends of bad weather conditions, boat traffic in February was slower than usual. Harbor personnel were kept busy putting floats/docks in and out and assisting boaters.

We wish everyone a very happy and healthy New Year. Boating activity was slow in January due to 7 SCA warnings, 1 gale warning and 8 days of rain bringing 7 inches of much needed water. Last January only had .2 inches of rain. With the reservoir overflowing, water rationing ended.

Visitors who arrive in Avalon Harbor from the mainland are frequently amazed at the crystal clarity of Avalon Harbor. Along the breakwater, the view of bright orange garibaldi, tabby-cat colored calico bass and bluish-grey opal eye can rival those seen in public aquariums. Kelp undulates in amber-colored forests and the normally private lives of ocean-dwelling animals are on public view.
