Open House at Mt. Ada Draws Over 600

9th Annual Pottery and Tile Extravaganza

The Catalina Island Museum is featuring a tribute to the beautiful, functional, and colorful pottery and decorative tile manufactured exclusively on Catalina Island with the 9th Annual Catalina Pottery and Tile Extravaganza.   The extravaganza includes a special exhibition in the museum's galleries showcasing an extensive display of works made by the Catalina Clay Products division of the Santa Catalina Island Company between 1927 and 1937.   Admission to the special exhibition is included in the Museum's general admission fee.

Museum Pottery Exhibit Features Special Reproduction

Last year pottery collectors Eric and Rose Franco created a limited edition reproduction plate as a fundraiser for the museum during their September Pottery and Tile Extravaganza.  The plates were an enormous success and flew off the shelves and sold out well before the end of the month.  This year the generous couple is at it again and has created another limited edition reproduction piece for the museum.

Island Scholars Visit Mainland Museum

Catalina Island Museum's Island Scholars recently visited the Drum Barracks Civil War Museum in Wilmington, CA. The Avalon School students have been working with Museum Curator Jeannine Pedersen since October to study the history of Catalina Island and explore the world of museums. Their final project is to choose a topic of Island history, research the subject, and create an exhibit for the museum's galleries. This year the students chose to delve into the history of the Civil War and the role played by the state of California and Catalina Island.

Farnsworth Family Artifacts Donated

The Catalina Island Museum recently received a significant donation of artifacts from the Jim Van Vorhis Family. Jim is the great grandson of Samuel Farnsworth (who engineered and built the stagecoach road to the Island's interior in the late 1800's) and the grandson of George Chase Farnsworth, a famous Catalina boatman and fisherman.
