Trieva Rae - 4th of July Parade Grand Marshall

The City of Avalon's Recreation Department and City Council will be honoring 97 year old resident Trieva Rae as the Grand Marshall for the annual parade.  This year's theme is "An Olde Fashioned Fourth."

Trieva was born December 10th, 1910 in Illinois.  She was one of three children, she has two younger brothers and her father was a doctor.  They moved a lot as a family and she lived in many different states.  Trieva and her husband Jim moved to the island in 1963.  Her husband Jim was the first manager of the Southern California Edison here on the island.  He passed away in 1992, they have one daughter resides in Denmark with her husband.

Trieva taught kindergarten here for the classes of 1976 and 1977 and is hoping her students will honor her by coming and walking in the parade with her.  Many of us may know Trieva as one of the community's piano teachers.  Trieva began teaching piano at the tender age of 12.  She is putting out a call to any of her piano students who would like to honor Trieva by participating in the parade with her.  Any of her former students wishing to participate should meet her at the Casio Building by 12:45 pm.

Trieva's other accomplishments while residing on the island include:  10 years as an assistant for the Avalon Community Church, serving the Woman's Club for 3 years as president (where she also served on both the District and State level), 2 years on the board of the Art Association, was a volunteer for the Hospital Auxiliary, she organized a book club, in 2004 Senator Betty Karnet named her Woman of the Year and for many years she organized the community choirs Christmas production of the Messiah.

We are honored to have such a dedicated member of our community join us in our annual event.  Trieva is 97 years young and is excited to wave to all her friends as she heads down Crescent Ave.  We really are hoping she will be surrounded by all her former students.

The City of Avalon wishes everyone a happy and safe fourth.
