After an overwhelming response to the Catalina Island Museum's special exhibition on the Island's fire of May 2007 last summer, the museum has decided to reinstall the exhibition for the upcoming summer season.   Thursday, May 10, 2007 will forever be marked as one of the most dramatic days in Catalina's long history.

The accidental fire that started near KBRT radio station burned over 4,000 acres of the interior and roared down the hillsides to the edges of Avalon.  Since the historic event, the museum has collected an overwhelming amount of material concerning the fire and will once again dedicate space in the museum galleries for the exhibition A Grateful Island: Catalina's Fire of May 2007.

The exhibit will feature many photographs taken by local community members who experienced the fire first hand as well as a timeline of events and breaking news video from the local news stations.  And, most importantly the exhibit will highlight the heroic acts performed by countless fire and emergency personnel and local community members.  A new addition to the fire exhibition will be a special display curated by ten Avalon School students.  The children of Avalon have a unique perspective of the day's events having never lived through something quite so dramatic.  Their display explores the student's impressions and memories of the historic event.  The exhibition will open on July 4th and will remain on display through the end of the year.
