This is a very important time to become involved and support the Catalina Island Humane Society! This was demonstrated by the excellent attendance at the recent public meeting of the organization.
Dr. Richard Denny, DVM, of the Animal Hospital of Catalina, discussed the urgent need to expand his veterinary clinic to bring it into necessary compliance with compulsory, state-mandated issues. Dr. Denny hopes to secure a permanent site for the clinic, and to combine it with other animal-related Island activities. To this end, he has been meeting with key community personnel.
These issues are vital to our community, and CI Humane Society is working closely with Dr. Denney, to help ensure that expansion and compliance needs are resolved. President Stacey Otte said that thanks to many generous donors this past year, there is just over $27,000 in the special fund that CIHS has developed for this purpose. Many concerned local people have volunteered to assist with fundraising, as well.
Dr. Denney and President Otte emphasized that planning efforts and negotiations are in the works for this urgent issue, and that they hope to unveil more details at the next public CIHS meeting, which should be on Wednesday, May 14 (more details as they become available).
There are other fine projects being planned, too! CIHS hopes to bring dog obedience trainers to the Island to offer classes, and to help youngsters understand how to treat animals humanely, and how to be around them safely.
Also, CIHS will have a booth at the upcoming City Spring Fest event, an afternoon of fun for the whole family, at Field of Dreams, Sunday, April 20, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. At the meeting, several folks volunteered to assist with both these projects!
A special membership drive and raffle is about to be launched, announced CIHS board member Judy Hibbs! For a minimum $20 donation, you'll be entered into the "Diamond or Pearls Raffle", in which you could be the lucky winner of four Anaheim Angels tickets (including preferred parking), or a string of lovely black pearls! So you'd best hurry and join as soon as possible, as the drive ends on Memorial Day!
Again, as President Stacey Otte puts it, "There's never been a more important time to get involved and support the Catalina Island Humane Society. There are more pets on the Island than ever, and the need for a strong and active humane society has never been greater."
Just call 310-510-1900 for more information, or to donate or volunteer your time. It is all very much appreciated!
