Over 20 people were in attendance at the recent public members meeting of the Catalina Island Humane Society (CIHS) held at the City Council Chambers on April 9.
A key element of the evening was a presentation by Dr. Richard Denney, DVM of the Animal Hospital of Catalina. Dr. Denney gave a comprehensive overview of the urgent need to expand his veterinary clinic in order to meet state-mandated compliance issues. He has had many meetings with key entities on the island in hopes of securing a permanent site in which to relocate the clinic and combine it with many of the other animal-related functions of this community.
The humane society is working closely with him as a partner to assist in the expansion and compliance issues. President Stacey Otte announced that there is just over $27,000 in the veterinary clinic compliance fund that CIHS has developed thanks to many generous donors in the past year. Dr. Denney and CIHS have been approached by many concerned community members anxious to assist in fundraising efforts. Otte and Denney both emphasized that they are in the midst of planning efforts and negotiations for the expansion and hope to unveil more details at the next public CIHS meeting on Wednesday, May 14.
Other CIHS projects include bringing over dog obedience trainers to offer classes and teaching children how to be safe around animals and treat them humanely. Several audience members offered to volunteer to help organize the classes and help with the CIHS booth at the upcoming city Spring Fling event on Sunday, April 20.
CIHS board member Judy Hibbs announced the launch of a special membership drive and raffle. For a minimum membership donation of $20, you will be entered into the Diamonds or Pearls raffle. The drive will end on Memorial Day, so hurry and join CIHS today to take advantage of this special raffle. You could be the lucky winner of 4 Anaheim Angels tickets (including preferred parking) or a string of beautiful black pearls.
There's never been a more important time to get involved and support the Catalina Island Humane Society. Please call 310-510-1900 for more information, to donate or volunteer your time! The Catalina Island Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) organization and was founded by volunteers in the 1970s to provide protection and relief for homeless animals. CIHS also works closely with the Animal Hospital of Catalina to insure quality veterinarian care through the dedicated services of Dr. Richard Denney.
