The major event for last month was Easter and the "vacations" and "breaks" that surround it. Easter fell very early this year on March 23rd. Easter falls on the first Sunday following the first full moon that occurs on or after the vernal equinox; the vernal equinox is fixed as March 21. Therefore, Easter can never occur before March 22 or later than April 25. However, coming early meant that the harbor was not as busy as weather is still of concern with possible high wind and seas and lower air temperatures. The lucky boaters that are visiting this spring are treated to spectacular views of our seriously green hillsides that are dotted with beautiful floral bloom.
Many in Avalon consider Easter to be the summer season "kick-off". Here in the harbor Palm Sunday signals the end of our winter rates and the beginning of our spring rates of paying for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday in advance and mooring for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for free. The string line was also removed and the club dinghy dock installed.
March was very dry compared with the preceding months with no measurable rainfall. Last month we also had less wind with 4 small craft warnings and 2 gale warnings.
LaveyCraft Performance Boats made their Catalina Run on March 30th with approximately 20 "go-fast" boats. The "Catalina Challenge", an outrigger canoe race was also held on March 30th with several support boats coming over on the 29th to accompany the canoes back to Dana Point Sunday morning.
Five Harbor Patrol Officers participated in Advanced Homeland Security Training.
