Avalon Harbor Activity Report - July 2005

July in Avalon...summer is in full swing. Gloomy weather with overcast skies and morning fog did not stop boaters from visiting the area. The Harbor was packed over the 4th July weekend, with many vessels anchored up and down the coast of Catalina Island. Adding to the boating activity were weekly visits by the MONARCH OF THE SEAS and ECSTASY cruise ships, bringing over 5000 visitors each week to Avalon.

The 8th annual Gold Star Dive was held Saturday, July 9th at the Casino Dive Park.  The event is sponsored by the Avalon Sheriff Station to raise money for the Avalon S.T.A.R. program and the USC Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber.  A record 110 divers participated in the event, which raised $9100.

July 2005 stats are as follows:

Great weather and warm waters will greet boaters who arrive during the month of August, the busiest month of the year.  The 15th annual Church Mouse Tournament will be held August 29-30, 2005.

Kids Fishing Derby, sponsored by Avalon's Recreation Department, continues throughout the summer on Wednesday mornings from 7 am to 8 am at the end of the green Pleasure Pier.  This derby is open to all kids and is free.

Just a reminder, the shoreboat does not go to White's Landing, except on holiday weekends.  The shoreboat does service the anchorage area, Descanso Beach, Hamilton Cove and as far as Frog Rock.
