Do we choose our animal companions, or do they choose us? More than likely, it is a little (or a lot) of both! It's probably difficult for us humans to accurately determine what might cause any individual animal to choose one human over another. Also, though, it's probably a good idea for us to think about what we, ourselves, are looking for in a pet, once we decide to adopt one (or two). This may help us decide which animal(s) to bring home to share our life with, so the pets' needs, as well as our own, have a better chance of being met.
For instance, if you've been thinking of adopting a cat, would an active, energetic cat suit your lifestyle, or might a more quiet, sensitive cat work out better for both of you? If you have other family members (including other pets), it's important to consider their preferences, as well. Some cats seem to be "natural lap cats", while others prefer less physical contact with their humans. Which personality do you prefer? If you find yourself drawn to long-haired cats, please remember that long hair does require very regular grooming, such as brushing every day, and you'll need to be able to make time for that.
All things being considered, though, in many cases it's best to just relax and try to trust your own instincts as to which pet is right for you. And of course, it's important to realize that bringing an animal into your home and your life, is a lifetime commitment for both of you.
