This week is National Pet Week - celebrated each year, May 6 through May 13, for over 25 years! The American Veterinary Association (AVMA), together with the AVMA Auxiliary, created this annual holiday in 1981, to encourage people to continue to care for their animals in a responsible way, appreciate and enjoy the animal-human bond, and make people more aware of the benefits of veterinary medicine.
There are many great ways to celebrate National Pet Week! Here are a few:
Consider adopting an animal who needs a good home, a pet who will fit in with your style of life, and become a true member of your family.
Dogs, cats, birds, reptiles - each have their own special needs. Educate yourself and your family to these needs, so your pets can live healthy, safe, and happy lives with you.
If you already have pets, be sure have them spayed or neutered, thus preventing overpopulation. When appropriate, encourage your friends and acquaintances to do so, also.
Be aware that animals are sensitive and can become lonely, so try to enjoy as much time as you can with your pets.
Contribute to our local animal association by volunteering your time for necessary services. Cash donations are much appreciated, as well.
Be sure that your animals have the benefit of necessary veterinary care, including regular checkups - especially since our community is now fortunate to have a fine, full-time local veterinarian!
