Posted: Monday, April 30, 2007 - Cub Scouts & Boy Scouts Unit #400

The Los Fierros District of the Long Beach Area Council of the Boy Scout of America will be conducting a Council Wide Camporee in Avalon from Friday, April 27th to Sunday, April 29th. This Camporee is being hosted by Troop 400 that is sponsored by the City of Avalon. It is anticipated that the event will include about 450 Scouts and Adult Leaders. This is the first camporee in 11 years in the City of Avalon.

A camporee is many things - camping fun for boys, it is also a perfect showplace for the Scouting program and, therefore, goes far beyond just being a gathering of boys.

A camporee begins with the recognition that a patrol is the basic camping unit. The patrol demonstrates its very best camping techniques and shares its experiences with other patrols.  Camporee programs include contests and demonstrations of outdoor Scouting skills as well as campfires, games, and field events.

This year they will be camping at the Field of Dreams. The events include:
1 mile navigation course along Avalon Canyon Road.
Kayak and swimming relay will be held at East Beach
First Aid Proficiency course will be held at East Beach
Stretcher Relay also held at East Beach
Castaway Cook-off Dinner will be prepared at the Field of Dreams
Pentagon Compass course will be held along Avalon Canyon Road

The morning events will begin with an opening ceremony at 9:00 A.M. with the events beginning at 9:30 A.M at both venue sites. They will break for lunch from 12:30 P.M. to 1:30 P.M. The afternoon events will begin at 2:00 P.M. at the same venue sites.  All of the events will conclude at 4:30 P.M. when the castaway cook-off begins.  The SCOUT'S DAY will conclude with a campfire and awards ceremony beginning at 8:00 P.M. at the field of dreams.

Please be patient and use caution on Avalon Canyon Rd. and East Beach while the events are happening throughout the day.

The Long Beach Boy Scout Council would like to thank the City of Avalon, the participating businesses and its citizens for their help and cooperation.  Everyone is invited to observe the DAY'S events and to cheer these hardworking, dedicated Scouts on.
