In February, the Catalina Island Humane Society became one of the fortunate beneficiaries of the time and talents of seven hard-working AmeriCorps volunteers. A program of the Corporation for National and Community service, AmeriCorps is a network of local, state, and national service programs connecting more than 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve with more than 2,000 non-profits, public agencies, and faith-based community organizations across the country. Since 1994, more than 400,000 men and women have provided needed assistance to millions through their AmeriCorps service. Open to the elements, over the years the wooden access ramp leading to the Humane Society's door had begun to deteriorate and was badly in need of repair. Under the supervision of CIHS Board member Ann Kuns, the seven volunteers put crowbars, hammers, and screwdrivers to the job, battling rusty hardware and rotten wood to remove the ramp surface and portions of the support structure. The volunteers returned the following evening to assist with completing the repairs and cleaning up the exterior.
The project could not have been completed without invaluable support from two other volunteers, Karl Karstens and Mark Tasca. The Catalina Island Humane Society is grateful to Karl, Mark, and the dedicated AmeriCorps Crew members who gave up their free time to "Help Us Help Them"!
