Catalina Island Medical Center honored its nurses with a luncheon on May 12. The luncheon was to commemorate National Nurses Week, which was held May 6 to 12.

"National Nurses Week gives us a great chance to let our nurses know how much we appreciate their hard work all year long," said Doreen Macktal, director of patient care services.

Macktal explained that all of CIMC's nurses have advanced certifications. "Because they work without a doctor on premises they must be experienced," she said. "Most of our nurses have 20 years experience and some have been working as a nurse for 30 years."

This year's theme for National Nurses Week was "Nursing: Many Roles, One Profession. "That theme is particularly appropriate on the island," Macktal said. "Nurses here have a wide range of clinical responsibilities, from skilled nursing to emergency care."
