In the face of disaster, the island community always steps up to help. Oftentimes, the problem is in knowing who's able to step up and just what they are able to do. Robin Cobley, RN, Catalina Island Medical Center's disaster coordinator, is hoping to find out just what help is available before it's needed
"We know there are many people with medical experience who are willing to help if there is a major incident on the island," Cobley said. "It will be much more efficient if we already know who they are and their area of expertise."
Cobley explained that it may be several hours before help could be sent from the mainland if there is a disaster, such as a major earthquake or a plane crash. During that time the island would have to rely on its own resources. "Retired doctors, vacationing nurses and paramedics, even people with carpentry or clerical skills could all help in a major incident," Cobley said. "We're compiling a list so we know what skills are available if we need them."
In order to compile that list, Cobley is asking potential volunteers to fill out a Disaster Volunteer Personnel form. The form asks for basic information such as telephone numbers and addresses, but it also asks volunteers whether or not they have experience in a particular field and whether or not they are certified. "Obviously we would need help from doctors and nurses," Cobley said, "But mental health professionals and public health personnel would also be needed."
The disaster volunteer personnel form is available at the receptionist's desk at Catalina Island Medical Center. Anyone who is willing to volunteer if there is a major incident is encouraged to spend a few minutes filling out the form.
Cobley will be contacting potential volunteers for additional information and tours of the medical center.
