On April 28, Catalina residents and visitors will be able to check the health of their feet, heart and skin, all in one place. Three specialist physicians will be donating their services to ensure the health of those at the Catalina Island Health Fair.
Dr. Steven Gammer, who offers skin cancer screenings, has been volunteering his time at the health fair for several years, as has Dr. Larry Abend, who will be answering questions about foot care.
Cardiologist Dr. Michael Moran will be donating his time at the health fair for the first time. "We're excited that Dr. Moran will be attending the fair," said organizer Dawn Sampson. "I think there are a lot of people who will benefit from his services."
Sampson said that all three doctors are providing a wonderful service to the community.
"Seeing these specialists outside of the health fair would cost hundreds of dollars," Sampson said. "At the health fair, they can be seen for free."
She did caution, however, that a visit to the specialists at the fair is no substitute for regular medical care. "Dr. Moran, Dr. Gammer and Dr. Abend will be offering screenings to determine if a full-work up is necessary," she said. "It's very important that everyone follows through with their recommendations."
The three physicians represent just one aspect of the health fair. There will also be a number of other free or low-cost health services available. Those include blood pressure checks, bone density monitoring, blood sugar testing and much more. Information will also be available about a wide range of health topics, including diabetes, immunizations and low-cost health insurance.
The Catalina Island Health Fair will be held on Thursday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Casino Ballroom. For more information, contact Dawn Sampson at 510-0520.
