October once again was a transition month for the Harbor. The Club Dinghy Dock and Barbara Pearson Dinghy Dock have been removed. A string line for dinghies is installed east of the Green Pier to provide a place to tie up for more than 72 hours and eliminate congestion on the remaining dinghy docks. Joe's Rent-a-Boat has pulled their moorings and closed for the winter. The Island Navigation and the City end floats have been removed however, not before they had to ride out some strong Northeast winds on the morning of the 13th. The other floats had been pulled off of the pier during the night and sunrise on that morning brought an increase in the already 15 knot winds to 20 to 25. Extra Harbor Patrol Officers were called in to secure the vessels in the harbor and retrieve skiffs washing ashore in the turbulent waters. The winds had started on the 11th which prohibited the Carnival "Elation" from calling on Avalon.
Lobster season officially began at midnight on September 27th with great expectation and a new requirement of a report card issued by the Fish and Game.
The 22nd Annual Jazz Trax Festival was once again held the first three weekends. Celebrity's "Infinity" and "Millennium" both called on Avalon on October 5th. Balboa Basin Yacht Club and Channel Cruising Club both visited the weekend of the 24th. With favorable windy conditions on the weekend of the 11th the Long Beach Yacht Club sailboat race to Long Point was held bringing several boats to the harbor afterwards to spend the night.
