(In the unlikely event of a tsunami, a 30 foot high wave coming onto shore in Avalon would cover the flat areas in town. This worst case scenario is used by local Emergency Responders in planning for a tsunami and all residents should be aware that a possible tsunami could happen with a major earthquake. The Great Southern California Shakeout is a week of special events featuring the largest earthquake drill in United States history, organized to inspire Southern Californians to prepare for big earthquakes and to prevent disasters from becoming catastrophes. What we do now, before a big earthquake, will determine what our lives will be like after. The Shakeout drill will occur in houses, business and public spaces throughout Southern California at 10:00 AM on November 13, 2008.

All Avalon Emergency Services will be participating in a full scale earthquake and tsunami exercise. Starting at 10:00 AM, you may hear the emergency siren, P.A. announcements and vehicle sirens as part of the drill. Please allow emergency vehicles the right of way as you would for any emergency. Avalon residents and visitors are encouraged to participate in the drill by practicing Duck, Cover and Hold from 10:00 AM to 10:05 AM. Please continue with your normal activities after 10:05 AM to allow emergency crews the freedom of participating in the drill without obstruction.

In the real event of a large earthquake with heavy tremors lasting more than ten seconds, a tsunami might possibly occur. During a real event, all residents and visitors are encouraged to immediately move to high ground such as Wrigley Terrace Road to Buena Vista Point on the east and Stage Road to Hogs Back Gate on the west without notification by Emergency Services. You are encouraged to do this on foot to avoid vehicle congestion and with your Emergency Preparedness Kit. In an event of this magnitude, the emergency fire siren would sound continuously to announce a possible impending tsunami and P.A. announcements would be made if possible.

If you have a real emergency during the November 13th drill, call 911. For questions, please call (310) 510-2015.
