Lancers football team crushed league rival 61-7
Avalon Lancers football team met the only real rival for Express League Champions, the Southlands Christian Eagles, at the Field of Dreams last Saturday and truly crushed them 61-7.

The game opened with Avalon kicking off to the Eagles in the end zone and the Eagles took possession 1st and 10 on their own 15.  Brian Ramirez and Vince Viernes held them to 5 yards on their first play and Kevin Hartley and Alex Padilla stopped them with a loss of 2.  On third down their attempted pass was incomplete and they were forced to punt on 4th down.  Brian Ramirez received the ball and returned the punt 60 yards for a TD.  Fidel Rodriguez's point after kick was good and the score was 7-0 Avalon.

The Eagles were forced to punt on their next possession as JD Laflin and Spencer Criegh held them to less than 10 yards.  Avalon took possession the Eagles 38.  Hernan Soto and the offensive line employing the Wedge gained 8 yards on their fist play from scrimmage.  Avalon converted on 2nd down with a hand off from Soto to Jose Octavo and then on first down at the Eagles 25 Soto again handed off to Octavo on a sweep around the left side with Soto delivering a key block and Octavo scored Avalon's second TD of the day.  Fidel Rodriguez's kick was good and the score was 14-0 Avalon.

The Eagles turned over possession on 4th down as Brett Hernandez, Brian Ramirez, Kevin Hartley and Spencer Creigh denied them defensively.  Avalon took possession on their own 11 and Hernan Soto fired a bullet to JD Laflin on a screen pass and JD spun out of a tackle and ran 68 yards of another TD and with the kick being good the score was 21-0 Avalon.

Again the Eagles were forced to punt on 4th down as Oskar Casillas, Alex Ramirez, JD Laflin, Hernan Soto and Brian Ramirez combined to prevent them from converting.  Brian Ramirez returned the Eagles punt 25 yards, Hernan Soto ran the ball for 15 yards on the Lancers first play from scrimmage and then Hernan handed off to Jose Octavo who ran 23 yards for another TD.  Fidel Rodriguez's point after kick was good and the score was 28-0 Avalon.

On their next possession the Eagles were stopped by Brian Ramirez, Mark Ramirez and a quarter back sack by Spencer Creigh for a loss of 8.  The Eagles punt was blocked and picked up by JD Laflin.  Avalon took possession on the Eagles 11 and QB Hernan Soto with a double fake kept the ball and went over the right side 11 yards for a TD and with Fidel Rodriguez's kick being good the score was 35-0 Avalon.

It was at this point in the second quarter that Coach Schrader brought Junior Varsity players into the game.  The Eagles took possession on their own 15 and on their first play from scrimmage Alex Padilla, Miguel Leyva and Alex Rhodes-Long tackled their running back and JD Laflin stripped the ball from him and ran 15 yards for another Avalon TD, the point after failed and the score was 41-0 Avalon.

The Eagles scored a TD on their next possession on 2nd down and the score was 41-7 Avalon.

The Lancers traded possessions and then Avalon took possession on the Eagles 30 and Hernan Soto on 3rd down and inches handed off to Brett Hernandez to went over the right side for 20 yards and the TD and Fidel Rodriguez's kick was good and the score was 48-7 Avalon at the end of the first half.

The second half began with Brian Ramirez returning the Eagles kick off for a TD and with Fidel's kick being good the score was 55-7 Avalon.   At this point the teams agreed to continue to play rather than "Mercy" the Eagles but that the clock would not be stopped.

The Eagles were forced to punt on 4th down in their next series and the punt was caught and returned by Robert Ozark and it was Avalon's ball 1st and 10 at their own 25.  Successive hand offs from Soto to Oskar Casillas and Brian Ramirez lead to Avalon marching down the filed in successive 1st downs.  Then on 1st and 10 at the Eagles 22 Soto handed off to Jose Octavo who ran 22 yards to the end zone and a TD.  Fidel's kick was blocked and the score was 61-7 Avalon.

All of the JV players contributed to the Eagles inability to score after the middle of the second quarter including, but not limited to, Jonathan Torres, Osbaldo Ramos, Robert Ozark, Alex Rhodes-Long, Nick Morones, Miguel Leyva, Kevin Hite, Martin Loza and Sam Zayas.

The game ended with the score 61-7 Avalon
