This Sunday, October 12th at 10:00 AM, Calvary Bible Church hosts a special Bible Teaching Fellowship Service in the park across the street from Avalon City Hall, offering a study of Paul's Letter to The Romans, Chapters 12. While on his third missionary journey to Asia (57 AD), Paul wrote a letter to the believers in Rome, exhorting them to beware of the popular Jewish heresy of the day: a strict legalistic following of the Jewish law as a way to salvation.

Paul closes his theological discussion on the Jewish law and salvation with a magnificent chapter reminiscent of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. Here, he exhorts us to a Christian way of life, a life built on the mercy of Jesus Christ, not on our good works. He is equally insistent that mercy, which so graciously forgives us, is the very thing which supplies us with a powerful and irresistible urge to do good works, transforming our whole outlook on life. Through humbling ourselves before God, we allow His incomprehensible love to work in us and change us into His children and heirs to His heavenly kingdom.

Paul reiterates that the death of Jesus Christ saves us from sin -- we do not save ourselves. Trying to be "a good person" or doing good deeds does not lead to salvation. Peter echoes Paul's words and tells us "there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12) It is only by our repentance of sin and direct commitment to Jesus Christ -- not belonging to a particular religion, following a church denomination, or doing "good deeds" -- that changes in our life and our eternal salvation are assured.
