The classic sounds of Bruce Belland and the Four Preps wafted across Avalon Harbor from the Catalina Island Yacht Club Aug. 30 at an end-of-season party and fundraiser.
Organized by yacht club Staff Commodore Dr. Bob Herstoff and co-sponsored by the Catalina Island Medical Center Foundation, the evening raised $7,587 for Catalina Island Medical Center.
"It was a wonderful event with great entertainment," said medical center CEO Bryan Ballard. "Dr. Bob is continuing the tradition of Joe Arno, who forged an strong relationship between Catalina Island Yacht Club and the Avalon hospital."
About 120 yacht club members and guests attended the concert and dinner. CIYC Commodore Jim McCampbell reminded those present of the importance of Catalina Island Medical Center. "You can never tell when you might need the hospital and you want to make sure it's there for you in your time of need," he said.
The Four Preps, best known for their international hit song "26 Miles," entertained the audience with their repertoire of hits from the '50s and '60s. The band, dressed as visiting yachtsmen, had the audience dancing in the aisles and singing along to their classic songs.
According to Ballard, the generous donation from the yacht club fundraiser will be used to help offset the medical center's new Siemens CT scanner, which was purchased last year. The scanner, which has proven to be more in demand than anticipated, is used in both emergency and routine instances to diagnose a wide range of illnesses and ailments.
"When our visitors and residents need medical care they can turn to CIMC knowing that we'll be able to meet their needs," Ballard said.
