From Oct. 20 through Oct. 26, Catalina Island Medical Center nurses will be available to administer influenza vaccines from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Post Office Arcade.
The vaccines, which will cost $30, are available to anyone who would like one.
"Getting a flu shot is an excellent way to avoid the discomfort and disruption of getting the flu," said Doreen Macktal, CIMC's chief of patient care. "It's one of the easiest things you can do to stay healthy this flu season."
In an average year, between five and 20 percent of the United States population will be infected with the influenza virus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, of those infected, 114,000 will be hospitalized and about 36,000 will die.
Vaccines are currently also available at the Catalina Island Medical Group office for $30, with no appointment necessary for those who just want to get the vaccination.
Seniors, those with certain health conditions and young children are generally eligible for free influenza vaccines. The free vaccine, which is administered and distributed through the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, will be available later this month.
