One of the easiest ways for doctors to determine a patient's overall health is to order a blood test, which can be used to diagnosis a wide variety of medical problems. Blood tests, however, can be expensive. On April 28, Catalina residents and visitors will have the opportunity to utilize the diagnostic capabilities of blood tests at a fraction of the cost at the Catalina Island Health Fair.
"Historically, the blood panels have been one of the most popular services offered at the health fair," Health fair organizer Dawn Sampson said. "We expect that to continue this year."
As in years past, four different tests will be offered. A Complete Metabolic Panel, or CMP, tests overall body chemistry, a doctor uses it to determine organ function and health. Lipid panels measure the amount of fat in the blood, high fat levels can be an indicator of future cardiac problems. The TSH test determines thyroid function. A PSA determines prostate health and can be used to screen for prostate cancer.
The costs for the blood tests range in price, but all are offered at a fraction of their normal costs. At the health fair, the CMP alone will be $30 and all four tests will be $90.
Fasting is recommended before many of the blood tests.
Most of the lab work for the blood tests will be completed at Catalina Island Medical Center. "Since the lab work will be done on the island patients can expect to get their results faster," Sampson said. Results for the blood tests will be mailed as soon as they are available.
The Catalina Island Health Fair will be held on Thursday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Casino Ballroom. Dozens of health services and screenings will be available for little or no cost. For more information, call Sampson at 510-0520.
