3rd Annual Catalina Island Eco Marathon to be held Saturday, Nov. 14th
Article dated: Monday, November 09, 2009

The 3rd Annual Catalina Island Eco Marathon will take place Saturday November 14th. The marathon course starts in the city of Avalon, runs through 22 miles of the island's interior and finishes back in Avalon.  Saturday's event offers three races for participants to choose from: the Marathon, the 10K or the 5K.  There is an estimated 435 total runners participating: 185 runners to participate in the Marathon, 200 runners to participate in the 10K, and roughly 50 people to take part in the 5K.

The 10K and 5K starts and ends on Cresent Ave, near Wrigley Stage.  The course includes the following streets:

  • Crescent Ave (north of Sumner Ave)
  • Casino Way (loop around the Casino)
  • Marilla Ave (between Casino Way and Viedelou Ave)
  • Viedelou Ave (entire street)
  • Camino del Monte Rd (west)
  • Del Monte Rd (entire street)
  • Los Lomos Rd (entire street)
  • Country Club Dr (entire street)
  • Avalon Canyon Rd (the entire street)
  • Tremont St (from Eucalyptus Ave to Sumner Ave)

Awards will be given to the overall male and female winners, along with the top three in each age group for the 10K and Marathon.  For the third year in a row there will be special awards for the Catalina Island Residents division.  The 5K Fun Run will not be timed.

Every year, including this year, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Catalina Island Conservancy.

"This race shows the true beauty of Catalina Island, by having the course run through the trails, valleys and ocean ridgelines, each runner experiences a personal tour of the island's interior, " said Mike Bone, Race Director of the Catalina Island Eco Marathon.  "The runners also enjoy giving back to the Conservancy to help sustain the trails and interior."
