The Bald Eagles of Catalina Island
Resident bald eagles disappeared from southern California by the early 1960's as a result of DDT pollution in their ocean food chain. The Institute for Wildlife Studies began restoring bald eagles on Santa Catalina Island, California in 1980, establishing a population of approximately 20 bald eagles, including five breeding pair.

Just over the bridge from downtown San Diego and a short sail from Catalina is a small, tree-lined beach haven known as Coronado. Coronado is about a mile from downtown San Diego and is linked to the city by the Coronado-San Diego Bridge. Crown City, as it is called (Coronado means "crowned one" in Spanish), regards itself as a friendly, small town of wide leafy streets lined with Victorian homes & Californian bungalows.
