Catalina Express and Island Rentals claim softball victories

The second week of the Men's Avalon Summer Softball League had Glenmore Hotel and Catalina Express facing off in the first game.  This game was back and forth until the fifth, when Catalina Express claimed the lead, and never let go.  Defensive highlights for Catalina Express belonged to Mario Chavez with his double play at second, the diving catch by Brett Hernandez in Center Field, and Jimmy Felix with the snag at shortstop.  For Glenmore Hotel, defensive honors went to Phil Mc Grath for the amazing catch in center, and Isaac Felix's running catch at pitcher.  Weston Leonhardi hit the first home run of the season for Catalina Express.  By the end of nine innings, Catalina Express claimed the victory with the score of 13-5.

Avalon Summer Softball League Opens Season

The Mens Avalon Summer Softball League opened it's season on Friday, June 19.  52 men are playing on four sponsored teams:  Art, Caps n Designs, Catalina Express, Glenmore Hotel and Island Rentals.  The first game of the night was between Catalina Express and Art, Caps n Designs.  Art, Caps n Designs opened the game with three runs crossing the plate.  Jorge Hernandez ended the Catalina Express threat in the second with his amazing diving catch in center to rob Ulyces Alvarado of a base hit.  In the third Joe Hernandez had the amazing stop at shortstop to throw the runner out at second to record the first out of the inning.  Art, Caps n Designs went on in the third to add four more runs to their total.  Catalina Express got on the board in the fourth with a run.  Both teams continued to score throughout the remainder of the game, but Art, Caps n Designs never let go of the lead.  Final score Catalina Express 9, Art, Caps n Designs 14.

The Locker Room Co-Ed League Champs

The Catalina Co-Ed Softball League wrapped up it's league play on Thursday, with The Locker Room capturing the League Champion title.  The Locker Room faced Hotel Metropole.  Both teams played short handed, with Hotel Metropole taking the early lead.  In the third The Locker Room rallied for 11 runs, to take the lead, and they never looked back.  Final score Hotel Metropole 10, The Locker Room 16.

Debris Barriers will protect camps at Swains Canyon and Gallaghers

Avalon Lion's Club: A Legacy of 'Doing Things'

For 20 years straight, Eddie Keyse, President of the San Pedro Chapter of the Lion's Club, and past Lion's Club District Governor, would travel across the Channel once a year to install the new Avalon Lion's Club President.  Keyes had a fondness for the Avalon Chapter, because it was the San Pedro Lions that sponsored the club on Catalina.
