50 Mile Run Watch Video Jan 10 One of the country's most challenging and scenic 50-milers-no cars, no smog, just great terrain, incredible views, fascinating historical sites, a well-organized race, nice people, great food . . . and even an occasional buffalo sighting. ALL proceeds from entry fees and sponsored mileage go to charity and is a fundraiser for the Avalon Lion's Club. Recipients include: Avalon Hospital, Avalon High School scholarships, Catalina Conservancy, Bill Putnam Health Care Fund. http://www.avalon50.com
Catalina Island Marathon Watch Video March 14 32nd Annual Catalina Island Marathon. Enjoy some of the most breathtaking scenery while running 26.2 miles over the Island of Catalina. The race traverses mostly dirt trails and roads through areas of the interior of the Island where very few have gone. The race starts in Two Harbors and runs to Avalon. It is a hilly, challenging Marathon, but worth every mile. Who knows, you may even run with Buffalo. The event also features a 5K, 10K, and Kids Run. Earth Day 2009 Watch Video April 18 Explore the natural side of Catalina Island and enjoy organic food, green living displays and demonstrations, family activities and live music. Video below was filmed at Earth Day 2008.
Just for the Halibut June 7 5:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. - Just For the Halibut, Just For the Kids fishing tournament. 1st place over $1,000 in cash and prizes. 2nd place over $700 in cash and prizes. 3rd place over $400 in cash and prizes. Rules: Catalina waters only, hook and line only. All fish to be at scales (Casino Dock Cafe) by 3:00 p.m. to quality. All proceeds go to the Kids of Catalina Island programs. $60 entry fee per angler. Includes: T-shirt, lunch & door prizes. Annual Parade & Fireworks July 4 1:00 p.m. - Join island residents for the golf cart parade down Crescent Avenue led by the USC Marching Band. 9:00 p.m. - Fireworks display over Avalon Bay.
